Are you an adult? Or have you just turned 18? Have you got your Election Photo ID Card (EPIC)?
Today, ie., 25 Jan has been declared as National Voters' Day in our country, India. The Election Commission of India is taking various steps to spread awareness amongst the youth so that newly turned Adults become the part of the huge democratic system of India, so that they enrol themselves as voters in their respective areas. The awareness campaign, as I read in media, includes reaching to the colleges and Universities and using the social network sites like Facebook and twitter which are so frequented by the youth of our country. It's really heartening to see this sea change in approach to reach out to the masses!
So, if you are an adult, then you should apply to get your voter ID card (Election Photo Identity Card, EPIC) and do your bit in building the nation.
I'd been associated with the election machinery, would not like to share much details about it, but what I observed that the educated youth, upper middle class families generally were seen less in numbers in a prominent New Delhi Election booth last time. So, don't get just your EPIC but do remember to vote when the time comes. Let the words enshrined in the Indian Constitution - Universal Adult Franchise - become a complete reality. Get to know more details about this Here
And what better day to talk about Indian Constitution, on the eve of the Republic Day. Heartiest good wishes to all my fellow citizens of India!

well..frankly, i havent exercised my right to franchaise till now.. somehow.. i have felt a 'futility'.. in doing so.. but at the same time....
i may be wrong in not doing so..for then, my vote may be misused by some scrupulous person to put a bogus vote.. but somehow i never felt i need to vote..
anyhow.. did you know. UIDAI today started giving Unique Identification Numbers to all delhiites starting today...
That's a wonderful initiative by you as well to spread the word through your blog. Thank you for doing that. Happy republic day!
That's definitely a massive change in Indian Constitution. So far, they've never cared / tried to reach out to Youth. Creating awareness campaigns like this will, without any doubt, bring a lot positive opinion amongst this generation, about politics/election/constitution and right!
Thanks for sharing this piece of information, for I wouldn't have known this!!
That was just what the doctor ordered. The middle class underestimates its clout but when it rises it can swamp the corrupt muddle that our leadership has become today.
Again, restless, we have shared the same thought. Do read mine :)
thanks for sharing the info. i wont claim to be a regular voter, but have exercised the right whenever i could.
good post.. also timely looking at the way things are going elections round the corner? :)
Great reminder...I have to coax my son to get it...With all the cynicism prevailing he is not interested.
Nice.. the next step begins now. Get all those newly registered one's to vote during elections, that is when the actual results can be witnessed.
I would also like every one to watch this video and spread the message.

Prashant - Howsoever sad the state of governance is, i think we should cast our votes.
About UIDAI, i read 2-3 months back that they started it in Delhi, to be specific in Nizammudin area for street vendors or so. Not sure about what u say... where in Delhi have they issued now?

ya.. 2-3 months back they have started..you were right.. but that was in just a village on the outskirts.. on 26th they officially launched it for all delhiites.. but the details are still being worked out.. details in teh sense.. who will issue.. where the centres will be etc.. watch this space for more updates.. !!!!!
the problem, is we can vote..? but who are we voting for..? there is this case of an ex maharashtra chief minister who presided over more than 400 farmer suicides..and when questioned about the suicides his reply was 'Suicide was a criminal offence' and the state is not going to take any criminal action agaisnt them'... ironically, this ex chief minister is right now Cabinet Minister for Rural Development!!!! now if you ask me the name of this person, he is teh clue.. he is the same guy who went on a picnic with his actor son and a failed director, to the Taj Mumbai just after the attacks...!!!!
with our voting.. we only manged to bring in a polity that works for its own benefit and nothing else.. i am compelled to say here.. you show me any rule.. and i will show you the man...!
I remember some very old conversation with one of my neighbors; an highly educated family. Father was district magistrate, mother was lecturer in govt. college, son was dong MA and daughter BA from a reputed college. On the election day, while I was going to exercise my vote, I saw none of them were going. On inquiring, aunt said its not safe to go on poling booth on election days! I was shocked and even debated how can she still be blaming politicians for all this mess when she does not even vote... That was the time when Bihar was going through all the shit (you know what I mean). Point which I want to put across here even the so-called educated and sophisticated class is very apprehensive about voting and these are the people who complain most. How can we forget rights always come with duty. If we don't perform our duty, how can we talk of our rights?
This is hight time - Just like that...
Restless,
First we fail to vote and then we crib about non-governance. Pity, isn't it?
Take care
Prashant - I understand ur anger and distrust. agree with it quite a lot. But at least we don't let someone else misuse our vote, if we choose to walk to cast our own vote on the voting day... that's all i can say.
