You mean to say all you guys already knew what does the song "Bose DK Bhag" song of the movie Delhi Belly mean??!! Phew! oh I mean Phew :(
I'm sure there would be many like me who didn't get the hidden Hindi word (rather an expletive) which comes to life when you repeatedly recite the name "DK Bose". Just a few days back, we were discussing with our family friends, which movie to watch and then came the mention of this song. We, ladies, were clueless about this 'Andhi Ayi' song, when a gentleman in our group uncovered the secret of this song. (BTW, the person was all gaga about Amir's capability to be mischievous in such a subtle way!)
I have to confess that I went googling about the word and searching it's meaning. I have to say that Hindi language has plenty of expletives and are widely used too. You have to observe people when they are frustrated getting stuck in traffic or parking area.
It is said that when we are really angry, we speak in our mother tongue. It kind of explains that why the sophisticated gentlemen too don't mind a few servings in 'apni boli' when they are really angry.
Have you not observed that we don't get so annoyed when someone calls a name in English (F**k being such a common word). Imagine someone saying the same in Hindi. It annoys when our own language is used. Ever wondered why??
Coming to the wave of excitement the 'Bose DK" song has started in our youth (read that it has become the Youth Anthem of today), I'm quite tongue tied on this issue. I don't want my children to understand the meaning in the underbelly of the 'Delhi Belly' song. People from Indian film industry too are not too happy about the song and another bold scene of the movie. Mostly, parents feel uncomfortable about such things because they have to share the screen with their small kids.
'Bose DK' song is a new landmark in being more open towards sexuality or being open in pelting out some insult to it. I wonder, how is this generation going to handle sexuality. Because words we use work on our minds, unconsciously. Using a word, depicting female genitals, with such casualness doesn't illicit any respect for the gender.
Are we not moving so fast in a direction when the charm of being loved, pampered and seduced by your lover would be smashed by the wrong idea of sex being a commodity, which can be bought or arranged for cheap.
RESTLESS
PS: Even after searching a lot, I'm not clear about how it can be a 'gaali'. Most of us born by normal delivery.

Songs these days are going down the drain. One of the reasons why we still remix old evergreen songs because songs of our generation are not worth getting remixed. I guess people these days just want peppy and catchy beats..they forget what the song has to say. Oh well.. I am thinking...what next?? What's the next cuss word in line? Anything is expected from the film industry these days! Very well written! Thumbs up!
You have said what I wanted to say... and only while reading this post the expletive dawned on me....I was wondering for the past several weeks.I dunno...its not a good sign of things to come, there has to be line to bindasspan...
it's a common joke among men and they all know its meaning. a friend of mine, like you, did not realize it until much later and sang the song at the top of her voice in a crowded cafe! we all played along and had a good laugh at her expense :P
Restless,
I have not yet heard this song, so I will not say anything till I do hear it. But what you said makes a lot of sense.
Take care
PS : Left comment on previous post too.
yeah, its quite pitiful that for mere sake of publicity bollywood is restoring to such means. And, than they blame technology for the piracy. When you can't make a movie worthy to waste hard earned money than it's quite obvious that people will look to internet for free downloading.
After having heard that song once, and knowing what is intended in the song, I am off to repeat the rosary saying RamRamRamRamRam... and you know what it sounds like :)
Cheers,
Blasphemous Aesthete
I seriously don't understand how did the censor board approve of this song...just imagine small kids singing this song...even though I belong to this generation, I just can't approve of this song...it's really disgusting Restless, really disgusting...
And Restless, I had commented long back on "100 posts-100 blogger pals"...do check it out...thanks for the mention..I really appreciate it! :)
Umm.... agreed. We were watching TV, me and my parents, and this song started playing. By the time I could locate the remote, the first verse played loudly and I was embarrassed like hell. Seriously, I dont get why people find it cool to associate themselves with slangs.
And where the hell is the censor board now :|
Btw, the music of the song is good though :P

aJ
Though the song is meant to sound "double meaning" but music is nice.
Like most other slangs in all languages, when people use it they don't really imply the literal meaning of the word. Most of them don't even know it actually - its just that these words naturally convey the mood of the speaker.
Haven't heard the song and like you, I might have missed the meaning even if I had heard it. But it is pathetic that even someone like Amir Khan has to resort to such gimmicks to sell his film.
But paying attention to what we utter shouldn't hurt, I guess.
Tks for feedback Nikhil!
Prateek, it's becoz of the music, we can't ignore the song... yeah it's catchy
Aakash, u can relax as many ppl r not able to get the real meaning of the song so soon! But, i know, it can be embarrassing. Even i don't understand why is it cool to be filthy mouthed??
I'm glad to c that a guy of this generation disapprove it.... I saw a number of young boys and girls writing happy comments about the song on some websites.... i was aghast!
Oh, u read that post.... seems i forgot that.... u were irregular in blogging those days... so may be.
Anshul, from ur comment it's not clear whether u like the song or not ;)
Rachit, I really like ur comment :) very true!
OK....u will listen to it, as it's all over the place.
:D Alka, we women cudn't really understand it!! Truly, it's not a good sign... wonder what's coming next. And when Amir does it... then others will also follow.
Thanks Upasana :)
Even I'm wondering what's coming next! I have to tell my little son not to sing a song, as many have a double meaning and he asks me "why mom??"
Don't know what to say.
tks dear!
Zephyr...... join the club of ladies u cundn't understand it.... me, Alka Gurha and now you!!!!!
On a serious note, yeah, it was not expected of Aamir..... they are having a party enjoying the success of this song!
ok, am completely clueless and foolish cause i still dont understand what it means- and pls dont enlighten me. i like living in a rose-tinted world-if u went to my blog, u'd understand!
I did not really get why so much attention is paid to the song...At least in parts where i live expletives are frequently replacing full stops in sentences so it was not a big deal to me but then again i dont watch tv with my family nor i have kids to worry bout:)
and is it a co-incidence that all foul words are related to female genitals?
Shows an utter lack of creativity.
Sandy, enjoy being in the bliss.... No, won't be explaining it!!!! Now, since u've read this post, at least u can save urself from the embarrassment of singing it aloud in front of others ;)
Zephyr...... join the club of ladies u cundn't understand it.... me, Alka Gurha and now you!!!!!
On a serious note, yeah, it was not expected of Aamir..... they are having a party enjoying the success of this song!
Edit Reply
Well said Varsha. Lack of creativity and sensitivity. U made a very relevant observation.
Dhiraj, such things begin to bother when u become a parent or have small kids at home. The kind of language we use tell a lot about us, so we can't be so casual about using expletives.
Hi, You know I heard so many people talking about this song and I was like, what's bad in it? I heard it 2-3 times to know what is the objectionable word in the said song. I was going to google about it today but stumbled upon this article through indivine. :P
Now I know what's the problem with the song. And I've been singing this song for many days all the time. LOL! Even still I don't know what this word mean, but I have 'overheard' many people using this abuse so I know it is a derogatory word. Well, all I can say to you is Thanks for this otherwise I would singing this song at the top of my lungs in front of god knows how many people. :(
Shilpa.
Shilpa :D I laughed a lot reading ur comment.... even I didn't get it... and now I've come to know, my son already knew this!!! We mom's don't really get all this stuff!!
Am glad I cud be of some help to u dear :)
Oh btw, now i know u sing too!
Cheers!!!
Think about the situation of the guy, who might actually be carrying that name. :D He is going to get tortured, for a long time to come.
Anyway, I do agree that this is not really creativity, rather I see it as someone who is promoting the use of such slangs. Bad...seriously.
okay, i have to admit , I've heard this song only a couple of times and i din know there was something wrong with it till I read your post. will give the song a hear and will come back and read this. maybe i'll understand what you mean.
p.s; i was kinda stuck at the nakkadwale song to care about this one. :P
yea true...good that you brought this up...but to look at the better side....'Bho' means O dear one in Sanskrit... 'Sad' is a prefix used for good things, like sadguru, sadiccha...Ika is a atmanepad i verb meaning to be....so Bho-sad-ika in sanskrit will probably mean ' To be a good dear one'.???
everything in life seems to have a better side :-)...
Cheers!

Well! "DK Bose" sounds cheap or not, has to be running down to an individual's perspective. The problem is not in the song, but it's actually in the way we want to relate it's meaning.
I would here agree with Anshul's "Rosary" comment, that's almost similar...
Anyway the post was well written| :)
INDIGENOU
Seriously, the creativity should be used in the right way rather than using it by including the abuses and objectionable words in the songs. Even in Chracter Dheela, they have used RAASLEELA. They have not even left God, women at least comes in human.
Frankly speaking, I unearthed the secret today after wondering about DK Bose for long.
And felt hugely disappointed with Amir Khan. Very disappointed.
Using foul words in the film as well as in lyrics have become a trend in our films under the guise 'What the audience wants'. And most surprisingly , they become instant hits.
strange that we revel in use of such words and spew hatred at hussain's art ...
Yes, this coming from Amir's movie is actually the disappointing thing for me too.
"Raas Leela" humanized and urbanized !!!!! Bollywood is really so creative!!
Welcome to this blog Piyush :)
Well, right, it's an individual's perspective.... but when something foul is being sold in the garb of something plain and simple, then we better be informed about it... and better be cautious of using and relating (singing and letting our kids sing) it so casually. We cannot close our eyes to the reality.
tks... be in touch!
SUB, yeah i read a number of websites searching for the meaning of the word.
Many sites , many meanings. I read about it's sanskrit meaning too. If we want to see the good side of things, then I'll give u an example - the hindi word of a girl's braid (chutiya) can be pronounced in two ways.... both meaning different things.
Let's not close our eyes.
btw, the actual meaning of the word under consideration... am not sure that can be an abuse... see PS to this post.
Cheers and tks for ur input..
Polidn, u r not alone...join the club of all women/girls here who couldn't understand the hidden expletive in the song!!!!
And, Don't bother dear... it's not worth it.
tk cr
Kumar Bibek, welcome here!
yeah, in fact a gentleman with this name is facing harassment becoz he's getting a lot of obscene calls already... google it... u'll find the article.
Oh..I was just kidding...:-)...I totally agree with what ever you said...
I have read your PS...words are just words...it's how we react to it that
gives it the power... even 'maa ki aankh' can become an abuse if it hurts
someone!!!....its all in the mind!
when to use which word should depend on how the ppl around you react to
it...as long as it *does not hurt*, say whatever you want....
Cheers again!

I think it's about time bollywood watchers begin growing up. The background music to this song is fantastic and if you don't read too deeply into it or start analysing lyrics, you can enjoy what to me, is the introduction of Tarantino'esque music (think Kill Bill) into Indian cinema :)
I do agree, slang is overrated and more often that not unnecessary, but then... Tom and Jerry advocated violence to the sounds of beautiful jazz/opera music...
Embrace and alter, not refute and anger :)
You have a good blog and expect me come over again again..:) I am clean bowled because I missed out the hidden meaning too. Just yesterday I asked my son who is actually Bose DK they are referring to in this song and he was clueless too LOL.
Solving your problem of why Bose DK is a "gaali"."Bhosdi in Hindi means a vagina, and if it's simply taken as 'one who came out of a vagina' there would be technically nothing wrong, but then this is taken as a slang can be for two reasons. One, as I read somewhere, that being of a female origin has not been taken in history as a 'strong' thing, even though technically it would be idiotic, and another one that I could think about was because a slut can be called bhosadi wali, literally one of the vagina. There's a possibility that bhosadi ke is understood as someone born of a slut."Source: http://www.bollymeaning.com/2011/05/dk-bose-meaning.html
Why take everything so seriously? Kids today are more exposed to the world than ever before, through the internet, social networking and in general. It would be naive to believe that if a kid isn't aware of expletives, he/she would turn out to be an angel, or otherwise.
It's a fun song that uses the language of the street and that's why it has that instant connect. And not to forget, it's one heck of a song. Plus, it's not a movie for the kids, it's got an Adult certificate.
I know I'm going to be pissing off a lot of "goody goody" people out here but that's a risk I am willing to take.
Why is it a gaali? Using it as a gaali is pure sexism.
Well! I haven't heard the song completely yet though I knew that it is from Delhi Belly. But guess what, I still couldn't get the meaning. Anyway if at all it is considered foul, it must be one of the Mr.Perfectionist's cheap publicity stunt. Indeed cheap.
yes you are right but this is best song.

Hello dear! I saw ur blog through Blogadda once... honoured to have u on my blog :) Welcome :)
Really glad that u like this blog.
haha, hope now u know who is DK Bose?!! Btw, all we women couldn't understand it!!
Don't know. can't comment on this.
Gud Harsha... u r better off that way! ie not knowing it!
hmm good music... catchy...
Replace bhag with run and u will get new word over there :)
I think censor board is to blame .They have become quite liberal .If i rem correctly many things I see in movi dese days was considered offensive and obscene while I was growing up.
p.s. I <3 the song ,its a very cathcy slogan in colleges =]
regards
I really didn't know what this Phrase or word meant untill I read this blog and from people's reaction it seems like a really vulgar word. I really don't see what is so terrible about this word maybe because I never heard it used it in any contex. Anyway, maybe the intent of this song is actually to take the vulgarity out of the word and reduce it's status from a horrible abuse word to a little less extreme insult or maybe even a friendly banter. What do u think?
Haha, looks like this post stuck a chord with the people. You are good at writing things on the right things!
''Bose DK' song is a new landmark in being more open towards sexuality'. You know Restless, this post of yours too has touched a new landmark in...shall I say boldness! Good...keep them coming!

I have reading this Tsunami of comments that were pouring in on this article.. and as i have been reading them, i was left wondering.. either the readers, most of them are from North India.. are either quite naive.. or they are pretending... Yes it must be quite naive, as these swear words are sprout out every now and then by almost everyone.. be it on the streets, be it office or be it home.. North India men (and women too, i have heard them too) dont bat an eye-lid when they need to use these words.. so when i read that nobody knew what the 'so-called anagram' of DK Bose meant, it couldnt believe.
Infact, it takes me back to three for four years when we a group of three four friends were hanging out in Ansal Plaza, and these friends of mine, who are journalists included two girls, and one of which wore a Tee Shirt which displayed the world "BOSE DK" on the front. upon asking her whether she knew what was written on her tee,she cooly replied that if we thought that it was a new joint venture between 'BOSS' and "DKNY", then we were wrong. Obviously she knew what she was into.. if not she had known teh exact meaning of the word, but atleast she had a hint of what it could be...
Well, coming to movie, the buck doesnt stop literally at this song. There is another song in the movie wherein the english word 'Puncture' is so accented so sound like another popular hindi expletive. it seems, this song has not caught the fancy of the kids and people like us. Thank god.
well, i would say, a spurt in such songs can be ascribed to the changing values in our cities. the so called urban lifestyles have changed due to increased open-ness to some western cultures which the westerns themselves have happily thrown away. we were only happy to retrieve them.
and now for all those who are eagerly watching what next on this 'Moral Happenings around us'...here is one.. next month in CP, we can watch the Slut Walk, which is supposed to be a walk in support of Sexual Harassment against women, where women will be walking in provocative attires. I wonder then, now that we all have out cotton balls on little kids ears, we can now very well tie their eyes too with a black ribbon....!!!!
i think this needs some correction.. well, i feel, we indians use this word in the wrong way. though the particular word has a derogatory meaning, westerners mostly use this word along with a suffix. like either ~ off, of ~ around or ~ up. in the first case it means just 'go away', the second points so something like behaving in a childish, and intrusive manner, and the third means botching up some act or just acting stupid.
but as always, we indians just ape the westerners fully not knowing about it... and just make a fool of ourselves...
looks like many women didn't know the meaning. I coincide with Bookworm for the first para of his comment. as for the song, another product of the mill of stuff not suitable for kids in today's world of movies and media. :( we can now just hope kids remember and follow whats right and wrong as taught by their informed responsible parents since keeping them shaded is no longer possible.
I hate Aamir for propagating such song. Even Iam a 20 year old boy. But whats so special about saying slangs to other. THese Youth will also get old oneday and the new generation will dance upon them. What Is this Youth.... Youth doesnot mean people who are crazy for slangs and sex. But uNFORTUNATELY i find it as in the case of many Delhi and north based boys who are very casual about regular rapes in delhi. Thereby if sex is what they all have in mind then they will sure applaud this song. We people are responsible for this also. The parents dont inculcate good values and they give slangs to others and the trend continues. Many People Refer Lord Krishna as playboy Without understanding that the Gopis were sages ih female form praying for devotion But What is being Propagated ..kRISHNA flirts with gopis.. Such is the sick mentality. All the Unscrewed souls let me tell u we all have to face Gods Judgement Day after death oneday. So Stop wasting time in giving gaalis to otheres and pray God because only he is our own. Neither Aamir Khan or This D. k. Bose song wont give u ultimate peace after death or be ready to be born as dog, Cat, Donkey according to karm yog. I Love Bollywood, But look at films like No one killed Jessica, 3 idiots..... sO nice in approach. So i wish if Youth could be concerned about the problems india is facing rather than this stupid song, Anyways sorry for telling to much but We all have to answer one day for whatever we do. Even an ant coming ubder ur feet will make u pay for that coz every action has reaction.
Yes we do get annoyed when someone use the word "F**K" even being in US along with gora americans. There is something called "Decency" and culture which Amir and gang are responsible to enhance not to derogate that we can't even sit with our family and watch this annoying song. You mark it as "Adult" but you do have idea that it is being played over radio station where even children, families and even elders are sitting together and listen.
We all do remove clothes but in bathroom. For god sake, don't define "Freedom of Expression" as being and running Naked outside your house. Lifting cover of shame is very easy but in family, if its gone its dead gone.
I read this post just now. I think i am already late. I dint know that this song had a different hidden meaning too. Yesterday as i was singing this song, my 11 yr old son said, "mama this is a bad word, dont sing it". I ddint understand and didnt believe him. So morning I searched in google you can imagine what i found. Only thing I can say is even aamir khan and all other movie makers only care about collections, They dont care if in the process they are corrupting young generation. And of course why not, they are not social workers :(.
