Mahabharata Exhibition At IGNCA New Delhi

May 1, 2011

A huge idol of Duyodhana was there on the open ground of IGNCA.  Since, I reached there one day late, so all the decorative paints, embellishments were gone from the idol.  I searched the net and found the decorated picture of the same.  See the link and you will how HUGE it was!!

The exhibition began with an introduction on Mahabharata.

One whole section showed the various military strategies used by the two teams in the war of Mahabharata - Kauravas and Pandavas.  As we know, they would arrange their armies in certain patterns to counter their enemies.  Depending on the shape that arrangement took, they were named like the one above is called "Vajra Vyuha". Understandably, the above Vyuha was designed by Pandavas.

I have missed out on the name of this Vyuha, but it is of Kauravas

The look from inside.

Handicraft work depicting a horse rider or is that a camel?!

Analyze this one!!!!!! This was life size idol..... so tall... I could hardly reach up to his chest level.  And the eyes were so real.... OMG... I looked at him and jumped with fear thinking he was real!!!!! Hats off!! such real art!!

To be contd...

My father used to tell me the 'chakravyuha' that the Kauravs made. It was awesome, only the way in, no way out except breaking it.

Nice clicks Restless.

as i said.. yesterday, i was magnifying the map and was seeing the places.. something interesting came into my mind.. places like Panchala... currently Nepal..means Panchali came from 'Nepal'... same goes for Gandhari.. who came from Gandhar.. which is the present Kandahar... Uttara and Madri came from Uttara and Madra.. which is Kyrgyzstan...it seems most of our women.. came from outside the present india....

The Second Battle formation may be... 'ChakraVyuha'.. which ultimately proved to be the waterloo of Abhimanyu.. Arjuna's son.. correct me if i am wrong...

Wonderful observation Bookworm!!

RESTLESS said...

Yes, it was Chakravyuha, which Abhimanyu entered but could not come out of it. He had heard about entering it while he was in the womb of his mother, while father Arjuna was telling it to her... and the later part of comingout, he could not hear as his nother fell asleep and hence the father stopped narrating the technique.

Isn't it amazing to even think like this?! An unborn child hears and remembers how to fight a battle?!!

Like Ramayana, even Mahabharata makes us wonder.... was it real??

lovely stuff. liked the pictures of those war positions and military strategies. it is interesting as I have read about and looked into the pictures of positions Greek soldiers take after watching the movie "300" recently.
